MIRT exploration Haaglanden

Being well-prepared to embrace the challenges of the future in Haaglanden. MIRT Haaglanden is the perfect pilot project in this respect.

Looking far ahead is important for the future in Haaglanden
How will the Haaglanden region look like after 2020? What are the weaknesses, issues and solutions? These are questions that can be answered easily today, but it is important to look that far ahead. Major changes in a densely populated area like Haaglanden require a lot of preparation time and money. Decisions must be made carefully. The longer we wait, the greater the chance that we will be overtaken by events. The problems are already present and will only become greater if we don’t do anything about them.

Rebel outlines a realistic vision for the future 2020-2040
In the MIRT Exploration Haaglanden, a Dutch acronym meaning Multiannual Programme for Infrastructure, Space and Transport, the Dutch national government, the provincial authorities and the regional authorities come together to investigate what is needed to ensure the long-term accessibility and viability of Haaglanden as a region. In this context, they asked us, as project managers of this exploratory programme, to take care of the management of the decision-making process. We painted a realistic picture of the future for the period 2020–2040. This resulted in a list of large-scale priority projects and a preferential decision by the directors involved. The exploration is a search for balance between accessibility, spatial quality and economic opportunities. Smart solutions are created by considering different projects and initiatives in relation to each other. Experts, interest groups, entrepreneurs and residents provide a valuable contribution towards the results of this project.

The MIRT Exploration is ‘Faster and Better’
This MIRT Exploration Haaglanden is one of the pilot projects launched as part of the ‘Faster and Better’ initiative. Very often, these kinds of initiatives are extraordinary quests, while also keeping a strong sense of urgency to reach agreements and achieve solutions. In this instance, it was a success, and we’re proud of it. We still can’t gaze into a crystal ball to predict the future, but we are certainly better prepared.
